In Christian theology, all believers are called to be leaders and disciples. We all possess gifts, graces and talents that we have been blessed with to build God’s kingdom. Even so, certain individuals are called to be set apart as leaders of a congregation as ordained ministers. In the Reformed tradition, we refer to this office as Minister of Word and Sacrament. Those who are ordained to this office are called to a tremendous responsibility as leaders and shepherds. It is both a privilege and commitment, not to be entered into lightly.
Our church has always valued education, training and ordination for its pastors. I am pleased to report that this tradition remains alive and well. Our church has been blessed with three individuals who have demonstrated a commitment to this local church and the body of Christ: Bobby Schuller, Chad Blake and Russ Jacobson. They have now completed the requirements for ordination in the Reformed Church in America (RCA). All are graduates of Fuller Theological Seminary and the RCA’s Ministerial Formation program. All three have successfully completed their classes, papers, and presentations. They also passed their oral exams with the Classis of California and are approved to move forward with ordination. They even completed a summer program in Holland, Michigan at Western Theological Seminary. This is not a process for the faint of heart!
On Sunday, June 28, 2015 at 3:00 pm, this season of preparation will culminate in a service of Ordination and Installation as follows: Bobby as the Lead Pastor, Chad as the Executive Pastor a Shepherd’s Grove and Russ as the Executive Pastor — Hour of Power. Dr. Chuck Van Engen, a professor at Fuller Seminary, will be giving the message. Please mark your calendars for this historic event in the Shepherd’s Grove sanctuary. You will not want to miss this opportunity to celebrate the culmination of a very important and lengthy process.
I have made serving this church the last chapter of my life’s work. I want you to know that I am personally excited about the future and direction of Shepherd’s Grove and The Hour of Power. I am grateful for these three young men, very capable and highly trained, who are being called to be our next generation of leaders. In addition they are friends, colleagues and brothers in Christ. Please join me in congratulating them and wishing them (and us) the Very best.
